Pretty Good Summertime Sunday

Just passing along a quick summary and a few photos from a pretty darn good summertime Sunday. I'm sure more photos will soon be up on Malcolm & Henry's new blog: Pontoon Pirates.

After breakfast we made a late-morning fishing expedition. Though I saw a couple of midsize bass, and Malcolm and I both saw one really big catfish, the few fish that we actually caught are best summarized by this sunny that Malcolm hauled in:

Which is bigger, the fish or the lure?

Here's just a quick photo of the house that I shot from the dock when we returned to port for a tasty lunch of BLTs. As you can see, the state of disarray is in midsummer form. You may be wondering how we've let things get so disorderly that lawn chairs are piled upside-down. However, they have a critical mission -- keeping a couple of inflatable floaty toys from blowing away in the breeze:

After we returned from the fishing expedition we prepared for our second expedition of the day by watching the "Balance of Terror" episode of the original Star Trek series. Indeed, as you may have guessed, the afternoon expedition took us downtown to the Detroit Science Center to see their big Star Trek exhibition and to watch the new Star Trek movie on the IMAX screen.

Unfortunately, no cameras were allowed in the exhibition itself*, but we had a good deal of fun sitting on the set of the bridge of the original Enterprise, dematerializing and rematerializing in the transporter room, and checking out all of the sets, props, costumes, and spaceship models.

We do however have a photo that may be from another big blockbuster movie: Twister:

You're likely to see several other photos from the Science Center trip up on Malcolm & Henry's blog tomorrow.

As for the French-twin review of the Star Trek TV series, exhibition, and movie? I think it's best summed up by this quote from one of them, "It's good, but it's no Firefly." Oh, these kids today. How do I explain that when Star Trek first came out the only points of comparison were Lost in Space and My Favorite Martian?

It turns out that we picked a good day to spend the afternoon inside, since it was pouring rain when we came out. But that worked out okay, too, because it provided a lovely end to our day of naval and space expeditons, a giant double rainbow over Detroit:

All-in-all, a pretty good summertime Sunday.

  1. You captured the day beautifuly, my dear. I love your story and the fact that it leaves out the less pleasant part, all that pesky throwing up due to the IMAX screening of the Star Trek movie. Perhaps the Pntoon Pirates blog will mention it...

  2. Well, we left it out of the account of the day until the first comment, anyway.

Yes, I felt it best to let the Pontoon Pirates provide their own account of that incident, if they so wished.
