Watchdogs

Katie the Beagle cares not for burglers.
She slept through the night,
And dreamt of chasing away
The real threat:

Rabbits.

Cady the Labrador was much more alert.
She warned us about the wind,

All.

Night.

Long.

She was also sure to warn us about
The other real threat:

Sunrise.

How lucky we are to have two such excellent

Watchdogs.

  1. Have I mentioned lately how food-free our carpets are?

  2. It's not nice to gloat big brother. I thought of her just last night when Shea spilled milk all over the table and it dripped down to the carpet. Oh how handy it would have been to have a Cady.

  3. Editorial tweak: I changed "Cady the Terrible" to the less-judgmental "Cady the Labrador" for the sake of the poem. It makes a nice parallel with "Katie the Beagle" and doesn't actively instruct the reader how to feel about Cady's watchdog activities, but instead allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions.

Please note that we have *not* changed her name, though I have to admit she does show signs of qualifying for "Cady the Tolerable" these days, a vast step forward from her youth.

  4. We were wondering at dinner last night what happens when you call Katie or Cady these days? Do you automatically get two dogs? Or can they distinguish between the T and D?

  5. Two dogs, though they do occasionally distinguish when one or the other is being addressed, based on which one you're looking at.

  6. Those dogs do not distinguish between Katie and Cady at all. They do, however, both ignore the name iqually when it is coupled with words like "drop that," or "no, no jumping," whereas they seem very keen on the name when it is coupled with the words "walk" or "good girl," or when it accompanies the sound of Kibble going into a bowl.

It's actually really funny how hard it is to get just one dog's attention. Pretty much impossible, really. To the whole same-sounding-name issue, there is a bit of attention jealousy going on around here.

Understandable. We all need attention and love.
